History of the Bertha Holloway Scholarship Fund
The Ocean City Marlin Club Auxiliary first started the scholarship committee at the request of Bertha Holloway in the summer of 1977. A vote was taken and approved. Volunteers were asked to serve on this newly formed committee and approximately eight (8) Auxiliary members accepted this responsibility. Bertha Holloway volunteered to be on the committee and served as Chairman. After obtaining acceptance from the Ocean City Marlin Club President and Board of Directors to start an Auxiliary Scholarship Committee, they proceeded to get in touch with Stephen Decatur High School and the counselors involved with the scholarships in the early fall of 1977. They met with Charlotte Henry, and much later Kay Russo. After many weeks of learning how all the information was handled and what was needed to be done, the Scholarship Committee met and prepared criteria for the application. They created an application with the criteria on the first and only page. Each individual item in the criteria was voted on and passed by the Scholarship Committee. Bertha requested a vote from this committee that any funds that would be contributed or raised for the scholarship were specifically to be used for Stephen Decatur High School (S.D.H.S.) students.
After Bertha and the committee discussed all the criteria in this meeting, with specific regards to Scholarship funds going only to Stephen Decatur High School students, a vote was taken and approved. The newly formed Scholarship Committee then presented the Ocean City Marlin Club Auxiliary application for Stephen Decatur seniors, to the Ocean City Marlin Club President and Board of Directors with a vote taken and passed. The President requested that the Scholarship Committee and Auxiliary put this into operation immediately, as it would be good publicity for the Club. The President said to advise him if he could assist. After obtaining all approvals, the application was typed and copies were taken to Stephen Decatur High School. A much needed fundraiser was in place by late October 1977 which was nautical comforters and shams custom-made by a company in North Carolina. Raffle tickets were sold by members and also sold at the Club's monthly dinners through February 1978. In May of 1978 the Auxiliary presented the first scholarship in the amount of $250.00 to a Stephen Decatur High School senior. After April 1993 when Bertha passed, a motion was made and passed in a general meeting of the Auxiliary to name the scholarship after her, in her memory.
Through the years a few revisions have been made to the scholarship application criteria and all were accepted by the Auxiliary and the President and Board of Directors of the Ocean City Marlin Club. After many fundraising events, the scholarship fund grew and the amount given to Stephen Decatur High School seniors grew also. In May 2011, on Awards night at S.D.H.S., scholarships were given to four seniors. Each recipient received $3,500.00 totaling $14,000.00 given by the Ocean City Marlin Club Auxiliary. The President and Board of Directors of the Ocean City Marlin Club then asked the Auxiliary to consider and to include the senior students of all Worcester County schools as future recipients of scholarships. The fishing committee of the Ocean City Marlin Club also decided that the funds from the Ocean City Marlin Club Ladies' Tournament would go to the Auxiliary Scholarship fund. The scholarship committee updated and reworded the application, which is the application below.
